    Review from Marchelle Aird

I thank Heavenly Father every night for people like Darla who are willing to share their talents, especially the talent of writing! Words are soooo powerful and she has such a great way of explaining deep gospel principals in a way that even I can understand.

I can’t even tell you how her book Trust God No Matter What! has changed my life in just the few weeks I have had it. I think learning to trust God is one of the hardest yet most important things we can do in this life because if we can truly learn to do that, then everything else just seems to fall in place.

I just love, love, LOVE this book! It has been such a positive thing in my life! It has changed my whole outlook and attitude on how I look at trials. Heavenly Father’s tender mercies sent me this book at a time in my life when I really needed it. To make a long story short my husband spent 34 days in the hospital after having a 7 pound tumor removed, which meant taking out his whole esophagus, so his stomach is now attached to his throat, causing a whole new set of difficulties. And while doing the surgery they cut one of his vocal chords so he had to have vocal chord implant surgery. And then he had a stroke as a result from a really nasty bacteria that he got from being in the hospital, that almost killed him too. He lost part of his vision because of that, and he also had to be on a pic line IV antibiotics for six weeks to get rid of that bacteria, which caused him to have a leaky valve in his heart, as well as liver damage! When he came home from that, he was having problems with his blood pressure being too low and he passed out, cracked his head open and had a seizure that was really awful! OH my, the trials just go on and on, I seriously don’t know how he made it through all that, he truly is a walking miracle! And just as we thought things were getting better, he lost his job! Talk about devastation! Especially because we REALLY need insurance, as my husband’s throat often closes off from scar tissue, and he has to go have regular balloon procedures done to open it back up again.

Receiving Darla’s book as a Christmas present from my sister-in-law and taking her advice and learning to “Let go, and let God” is what has carried us through these hard times and given us peace! (That and the prayers of so many family and friends.) I so believe in the power of prayer, I know that it works, and now I also know that Trusting in God works too!

Darla’s book reinforces the fact that our Heavenly Father loves us more than we can even imagine, that he does know each of us individually and that he has a customized plan for all of us. Like I said, it has totally changed my whole outlook about trials. It is so much more exciting to look at them as an adventure or Journey that you are going on with the Lord, wondering where he is going to take you or what he is going to teach you, rather than this huge trial that you are just forced to endure! Perception and attitude make ALL the difference in the world!!

In Darla’s book she also goes through many negative myths and untruths that the adversary tempts us to tell ourselves every day! I think I was telling myself every one of those things! But Wow! What a difference when you know the truth!

Trusting God is one of those things that you know you should do, but it is way easier said than done. One of the best thing about Darla’s book is that she doesn’t just say, “Trust God No Matter What” she actually gives you specific suggestions about how to achieve that! And they work! That is what makes this book a priceless treasure! I bless my sister-in-law, Shirley, ever day for giving me this book; it is THE BEST and most useful Christmas gift I have EVER gotten in my LIFE! EVER!!!

If you, or someone you know is going through trials, (and who isn’t in these last days) then you have GOT to get this book. You will never regret having this priceless treasure in your gospel library! In fact I think it should be required reading for every Christian alive! What a better place this world would be if we all just trusted Him, our creator, the one who knows us best and the one who only wants the best for us! When we let go and let God take over our lives it will be better than we could ever possibly imagine or manipulate it to be by ourselves. And if we do, the peace will come. This book is a definite MUST read!!

    By Chance or by Design?

    By Shirley Hendricks

I was Enrichment councilor in my Ward's R. S. Presidency. I found it easy to approach or call or write or e-mail anyone I thought would lift the sisters spirits, that would bring them closer to our Savior, that would bring joy and sunshine into their lives......
..........Last fall I enjoyed an article on Meridian Magazine online called “The Amazing Connection Between Thoughts and Feelings” . I read “about the author”, Darla Isackson, and noticed she lives in an adjoining town so I decided I wasn't out anything to e-mail her to ask if she would come and speak to the Relief Society sisters in my ward. I had ordered a copy of her book Trust God No Matter What! from Meridian Publishing. As I began to read it, I found every chapter just as helpful as the article, and invited her to talk about her book, as well as the article. She graciously accepted my invitation. After she spoke , I asked her for a copy of her talk which I shared with my sister-in-law. I received the following e-mail reply:
"...........My brother was having a really hard time again tonight. I read him Darla’s talk about discouragement! Oh, those words are soooo powerful and he loved it!! It really helped him; he felt so much better! I reminded him that Sister Isackson said, all you have to do to keep the darkness away was to fill your life with light..................!!"
I gave the book “Trust God No Matter What” to this same sister-in-law. Almost daily I would get e-mails from her saying how much she loved the book and how much help and inspiration she received from reading it.

I was given counsel to turn a concern I had over to the Lord. I was having a hard time doing that until I read Darla’s chapter on “Trusting God when A Child Strays.” What wisdom I found there. I was reminded about our agency and that it’s not up to me to “control.” That is what Satan does. Our Loving Heavenly Father has given agency to all of us, including our children, and after we guide and teach and love them, it’s up to our children to choose for themselves. The Lord knows what is in their hearts. He knows the big picture. We do not and we just need to TRUST HIM to take care of things in His due time, not ours. After reading this chapter it was so much easier, knowing I was turning my concern over to the tender care of our loving Heavenly Father. A burden was lifted.

Every chapter in Trust God No Matter What! has amazing, insightful suggestions on how to cope with a variety of trials. Darla has a wonderful gift of being able to write words that inspire. She shares her personal trials and then writes words of wisdom and insight, explaining how she was able to endure and Trust God. Her experiences give the reader the courage toTrust Him, as well.

I think it was not by chance I read the article in Meridian Magazine! So much good has come from reading the article, then the book, listening to Darla speak and then sharing. There has been such a positive, happy, ripple effect.

I’m grateful to have the privilege of reading her writings and to have come to know Darla and call her my friend. She has touched my heart and strengthened my testimony.

My review of Darla’s book will be in the form of some of the notes of appreciation I’ve written to her in the past few months:

I have been reading your book Trust God No Matter What! and loving it! Thanks for all you've shared and how much it has helped me, strengthened my testimony, and nurtured me.

Your book was a great comfort to me one day last week. I loved the sections on pages 16 &17 titled “As Man Thinketh” and “Faith Saves Our Lives Physically and Spiritually.” Like you, I also fight the enemy of my soul! I loved your statement "The instant my mind in not fastened on spiritually edifying thoughts, the enemy of my soul bombards it with doubt, fear, negativity, and discouragement.” You helped me see that I have a choice. That I can choose faith, I can trust God and reach out to Him for help and comfort. I can fight against the overwhelming fears, doubt, stress, and difficulty that Satan would inundate me with! I love the scripture in Alma, Chap 37:33 "...teach them to withstand every temptation of the devil, with their faith on the Lord Jesus Christ." I think this applies to our thinking, more than anywhere else. Reading this section of your book at this particular time has been a great comfort to me!

Your book blesses me every time I read it! It blesses Chuck too and he uses illustrations from it in our discussions and family home evenings. Today I went to the Gardens and sat in the shade and read from your book. (It was heaven!) You were talking about choosing faith, even if you don't “feel” it at the time—that faith is a decision more than a feeling. I was strengthened and nurtured by reading from your book.

June 10th I love your book! I learn much from you! I so desperately want to do better at not being so stressed! How I relate to the following paragraphs from the introduction of your book:

“Sometimes I feel like a lost child because the world I grew up in has disappeared.

“Can I trust God with all of it? Can I see fulfillment of prophecies and know that God is not surprised? After all, this is His world and His plan. Trust in God No Matter What! is about how I’m learning to trust Him even when earth-life is a far cry from our existence with Him before we came here—and from the glory we are told we can have in the eternities . . .

“I know that the peace of my soul does not depend on the economy or the political climate, or the level of righteousness in the society in which I live, but upon my awareness of God’s influence and loving care. I stay in a place of inner peace only when I remember that God is in control, that the ultimate outcome is sure and that we are safe in His hands. What happens between now and the Millennium will not thwart His purposes, but bring them to fulfillment.”

I so needed to hear that reassurance right now. Thank you!

I know that Chuck and I are but two, but we have been helped, strengthened and touched by your book. I also intend to recommend it to others. It has been a tool used by the Spirit to help me at this time. I really can't put into words how it has helped me! I hope that Heavenly Father will open a way for others to find your book, for I know that many could be helped by it! Also, I wanted you to know that I have loved reading about your real-life feelings and experiences. I feel that it took great courage for you to share like that, and it has been greatly appreciated.

Your book is Heavenly Father’s way of reaching me right now. As I struggle with two painful issues, it has been heaven's blessing in giving me guidance, comfort and help. For instance, at the beginning of chapter eight: "Surrender is seeing a force coming against you that you know you can't handle and turning from it to set your eyes upon the Lord." I loved the story of Jehosephat and "Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude (or challenge); for the battle is not yours, but God's...set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the Lord with you...fear not, nor be dismayed.” This is so much what I need right now! I read it and feel the Spirit and know this is key for me and that it is true.

I have been reading your book in the Gardens today. Oh, how it has blessed me! It has been the vehicle for the Spirit to teach me and be with me! I know you have been somewhat discouraged about lack of response to your book, but be patient. Remember that the Lord works in quiet, unassuming ways. I know that He had you write this book partly for me! Every time I read it, I am comforted, taught, strengthened, and brought closer to the Lord. I know that others will find your book, and it will be the same source of comfort and strength to them. As you know, the Lord can do His work, and He will find ways to bring this book to others - just as He has brought it to me!

I so identified with the start of Chapter 8, where you described your struggle. It was as if you were describing me! Reading what you wrote was so helpful! I needed to be reminded that I don't need to do it all; instead, I need to yoke-up with Christ. Now, if I can only learn how to do this!

Several things on page 70 helped me and touched my heart, such as your saying that the contrast is amazing between the misery you have felt trying to do things on your own and the sweetness of the Spirit when you surrender and feel the rest of the Lord (oh how I need and want this!) Also that the adversary can only keep us miserable if we forget to apply the sweetness of resting in the Lord's way.

Other pearls that have ministered to me on that same page: "I get so caught up in the challenges and emotional issues of the moment that I forget how light and easy the Lord's yoke is. I forget the sweetness of His Spirit, of being strengthened by His love and guidance." As I try to handle the current challenge, you taught me that it is possible to set aside my fears, but it's not possible (to handle my challenge), if I'm trying to do it by sheer will power. It's not possible when I think I can do it by myself. "What makes it possible? Not more striving, but surrender. Humbly submitting to the yoke of Christ and the guidance of the Spirit.” Can you imagine and feel how powerful this truth is, as I cope with the overwhelming nature of the challenge I'm facing right now?

Please pray for me, Darla, that I will be able to have that quality of spirit that will let me surrender. Also on page 71 - I loved your words, "I sat in amazement as I envisioned for the first time the Savior of the world inviting poor, lowly me to be yoked with Him, find rest, share His perfection, His love . . . The Savior is giving us an invitation to join Him, to be yoked with Him. He doesn't load a heavy yoke onto us and leave us to plow alone.”

Thank you, thank you, for your book. Thanks for sharing the wisdom and the love of your life experiences with me!

Your book, has been the "voice" of the Spirit to guide me to an important decision [to turn down a job.] The voice of the Spirit to me today from your book was "don't worry about what you can't do. Just trust in my guidance.” (page 72) My stress has been lifted, thank goodness! I realized that I "couldn't" do that particular job under the current circumstances of my life, and I was not to worry and trust that He will guide me to something else.

I feel a huge sense of relief! This afternoon, I even stopped to lay on the twin’s beds and listen to them and talk with them as they cleaned their rooms. I got up to leave and Stacey said, "Where are you going? We want you to stay with us.” Those are the simple, magic moments that just don't happen if you get too busy, too tired, or too stressed!! I've missed so much in my life because of lack of understanding, time, and proper focus!

Thanks for how your book is blessing me!

Darla - I learned a lot of good things from your book this morning. It has been helping me in the intense pain I have felt in having my daughter move cross country (I was reading the section about "letting go"). I can't express how much I have learned and how much your book has helped me!

    Conclusion
And so it goes. Every time I read from Trust in God No Matter What! I am blessed. Darla concludes the introduction of her book by saying, “The Lord said, “Behold and lo, mine eyes are upon you, and the heavens and the earth are in mine hands” (D&C 67:2). I know that we truly are in His hands. The more we recognize that fact, the more we can let go of undue stress, worry, and over-responsibility for things we can’t change, and the more we can feel His comfort and love. I believe we can make trust in God a habit of the soul, as natural as breathing.

“I offer this journal of my continuing spiritual journey as my personal witness that the Lord lives and loves us, and that we can trust Him completely. Because we are imperfect mortals, so inclined to forget we need to nurture and renew our trust in God and Christ daily. Spiritual starvation is common for those who don’t make the effort. May this book be part of your nurturing and renewing.”

The 300-page book is divided into sections such as “Trusting God When Prayers Don’t Seem Answered,” “Trusting God When We Are Hurting,” and “Trusting God When Children Stray.” The Contents list alone reaches out and promises balm for some of life’s hardest dilemmas. Darla keeps those promises. In Trust God No Matter What! you’ll find no “same-old” worn words, but fresh, honest, comforting, enlightening Christ-centered insights.

Don’t miss out. This book is sure to bless your life as it has mine.

    Trust God No Matter What

Reviewed by David Merrill Tuttle, PhD

Meridian Publishing has just released a new book by Darla Isackson, a favorite Meridian author. Called, Trust God, No Matter What, the book can be purchased by clicking here or going to www.meridianbooks.net.

Darla Isackson has been there, done that. Of recent authors I have read, Darla Isackson strikes me as both authentic and centered as she writes of personal tragedies that have the potential of moving people to fear or faith.

Everyone has trials, problems, challenges, and disappointments. Isackson says, "it's how we respond to each one that determines how quickly we learn the intended lesson."

Another title for her book could be Spiritual Sanity: Regaining Perspective in the Face of Life's Challenges . Darla writes from personal experience and effectively debunks myths we perpetuate such as "no one else is facing the trials I am," and "the Mormon face where Sunday church goers have no problems and no worries."

Darla Isackson, who experienced divorce after 22 years of temple marriage and whose son died of suicidal depression, shares these and other experiences with the wisdom earned through the Refiner's fire. "He knows what I need to learn," she says, acknowledging that responsibility and accountability lie "with me only." Because she is willing to share her own story without complaint and without sentimentality this reader was able to identify with her accounts that resembled me and my attitudes, biases and prejudices, as well as pre-conceived notions about the real dilemmas I face.

Tears flowed freely as I read Darla's powerful insights that follow painful experiences, "provided I look to God, trusting that each has its purpose." For example, "pridefulness can't be yoked with Christ, only humility."

There is an incredible reach and span to Darla Isackson's writing from personal to universal, from grief to joy, from misery to understanding.

Typically we like to make a distinction between our private and public lives and say, "Whatever I do in my private life is nobody else's business." But anyone trying to live a spiritual life will soon discover that the most personal is the most universal, the most hidden the most public, and the most solitary the most communal. As another has said:

What we live in the most intimate places of our beings is not just for us but for all people. That is why our inner lives are lives for others. That is why our solitude is a gift to our community, and that is why our most secret thoughts affect our common life.

Jesus says, " Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." (Matthew 5:14-15).

And this is what strikes me most forcibly about Darla's writing: the most inner light is a light for the world because the inner light is a reflection of His.

To me, Isackson exemplifies what has been referred to as "downright solid faith in the Lord, Jesus Christ" because when we are in the foxholes of life, there is no room for gray. It's total faith in a Savior because there is nothing else. She presents practical applications of eternal principles. And she cites many other authors to illustrate those principles, including great stories and insightful quotes, crafting them to the topic at hand.

Darla personalizes the gospel in ways both poignant and powerful. She teaches that faith is always a choice in spite of how I may feel in the moment.

Just reading the Table of Contents shows a remarkable breadth and depth of understanding of what it means to be "in the hands of God." We trust God when we are hurting when suffering physical pain, spiritual dilemmas and emotional trauma. We learn to trust God when prayers seem as brass, when we pray amiss, when the answer is no. We come to trust God when a child strays when grief overcomes, when heartaches are real and when children disobey (when we try to help in the worst way)!

Continuing the review of the contents of this insightful book, we see that God can be trusted even when divorce shatters our confidence, when the "forever family" is not, when we acknowledge our part in its dissolution and when through a broken heart we let in the light of Christ.

As we continue through the chapters, we come to appreciate with Darla the power that trusting God gives us when a loved one dies, when we are angry, discouraged or don't know how to forgive, finally experiencing the "sunrise after sorrow" that comes through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, that most exalting doctrine of the Restored Gospel.

Darla Isackson, in ways always personal and touching helps us explore the "spiritual anatomy of anger," looking more deeply at the atonement and in particular at how it helped her face the despondency following the death of her son. Indeed this book was one of the "fruits" of that heart wrenching trial. Trusting God means less striving, more surrender including a surrender of our pride and the difference between "letting go" and "giving up."

The section on faith and trust in God is particularly helpful to me because the question is posed: Can faith be a decision? Says Darla:

I've concluded that faith cannot depend on outside circumstances at all; it is instead an inner choice based on belief in eternal promises and trust in God's plan. Faith must be based on His truth. It is a myth that if I follow Christ and keep my covenants then all will work out as I plan or wish that I can receive some guarantee through good behavior. Look at the life of the prophets! Instead, true faith knows that the goal is to make His will my will and to trust God whatever comes in the meantime.

And the discerning summarizing statement was both pithy and perceptive: "Faith, like forgiveness, is not simply an emotion, but often requires of us a decision to act in favor of what we desire before the blessings flow."

The more I read of Darla Isackson's book, the less I wanted it to end. Each section, each chapter, each story, scripture and quote simply added to the body of insights and perspective she imparts to "real-life" gospel questions and issues: when our spiritual lives are in jeopardy, what faith is and isn't, why God's purposes cannot be thwarted.

Finally, trusting God is based on gratitude wherein we "enjoy the sparkle of the snow."

I have a 94-year-old friend who is very dear to me. She called one evening after she received a piece of my writing an essay I thought would comfort her in her afflictions. Much to my surprise, she sensed the emotional pain I had been feeling when I wrote it, and she was concerned about me. She thinks I have always been a bit too serious about life, and said, "Oh my dear Darla, you can just enjoy the sparkle of the snow you don't have to shovel it!"

Just as a teaser, I can tell you that your reading will show how to be grateful even for fleas! Yes, those "horrible little creatures" that enabled prisoners to study the word of God.

Continues Darla, "Can we each learn to thank God not only for the fleas in our lives but also for the thorns and briars and noxious weeds that afflict and torment us? Can we repent of our short-sightedness and trust God's all-knowing, infinite wisdom?"

This author is not hesitant to share her most intimate and cherished experiences if they will help illustrate a point. Time and again she chooses to divulge events that while private perfectly capture the generality for us all. My own emotions were accessed through her stories, endearing her to me and to the precious principles of truth taught therein.

The last section of the book trusting God because He is most trustworthy is perhaps the most personal and most specifically applicable to each of us. Darla Isackson crams a lot of content in to this final portion of the book, illustrating the gift of the Word of God in our lives, reminding us that one of His names is The Word. She exclaims:

No wonder I love the scriptures so much they are filled with the words of Christ, filled with soul food. When I feast, rather than nibble, those words nourish and edify me and are the nutrients for spiritual growth and guidance. How many times I have been faint of heart, soul-hungry, and have come to the scriptures and been filled, satisfied, lifted up.

"The Lord is my light," she continues, literally and figuratively:

No wonder I yearn for the dawn; no wonder I bask in the warmth of the sun's rays; no wonder everything good in life can be compared to light, everything evil to darkness. I was born with the light of Christ; consequently I yearn to fill my life with that light. And since I've made covenants to take upon myself His name and always remember Him, any moment without His light is hard to bear.

One of just many personal stories shared in the book speaks of the marvelous change that takes place when one truly comes to appreciate the power of the Atonement. Hearing the testimony of a man recently released from prison, Darla explains:

I was astonished when he said he had been released from prison only a few days earlier. His countenance was full of light; his words full of hope. His testimony of the Savior's power in his life was strong and sure. I saw a living witness that day of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, born into the world to wipe away our sins.

And I am certain, that you will, like me, resonate with the power of Darla's poetry, written from a place of inspiration to encapsulate profound ideas:

    One Tiny Candle

    Determined to defeat daunting darkness,
I feverishly tried to load it into buckets
    Carried, dumped, loaded again
    Until I collapsed, exhausted.

    Darkness stood undiminished.
    I wept in frustration,
    Proven powerless, my task impossible.

    A friend appeared
Holding one tiny candle, one flickering flame.
I gasped as that wee speck of light
    dispelled darkness.

I threw my bucket far away and ran for candles.
My friend's candle lost no light by lighting mine.
We two passed our flames to candle after candle.

Each tiny flame ate hungrily, voraciously, big gulps of darkness,
    Replacing it with shimmering light.
This effort not exhausting, but joyful!
And I, a child of Light
Recognized at last my one true task.

My recommendation for this book is unstinting. I find new gems with each re-reading, with insights giving succor to my soul. There is something Hugh Nibley said regarding scholars and that is that they publish. Darla Isackson is a student of the scriptures, a practitioner of their truths and a disciple who trusts God, no matter what.
